Washington Township has set an application deadline of Jan. 21 for those interested in becoming a trustee.

Long time trustee Doug Coleman resigned Dec. 31 to take on the role of Scioto County Commissioner, to which he was elected in November.

According to Cheri Seevers, Washington Township Financial Officer said the remaining trustees, Jim McGraw and Jerry Russell will meet on Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the township offices on S.S. Davis Ave. to interview and appoint a new member.

She said anyone interested in applying for the position should have their resumes sent to P.O. Box 90, Portsmouth, Ohio 45662 by Jan. 21.

“We’ve had about 15 people apply for the position so far,” Seevers said.

The township is going to follow the guidelines within the Ohio Revised Code for this situation. Seevers said the only qualifications to be a trustee is to live in the township with no age requirements.

According to Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn, the remaining trustees will have thirty days to appoint Coleman’s replacement after his resignation.

Kuhn cited Ohio Revised Code 503.24. It states, “if a township is without a board or if no appointment is made within thirty days after the occurrence of a vacancy, a majority of the persons designated as the committee of five on the last-filed nominating petition of the township officer whose vacancy is to be filled who are residents of the township shall appoint a person having the qualifications of an elector to fill the vacancy for the unexpired term or until a successor is elected.”

He said if both of those things do not happen, the appointment will be left up to Scioto County Probate Judge James Kirsch.

Seevers said the township trustees are responsible for the management of the township and its employees.

“The role of a trustee includes overseeing the township and make decisions about all kinds of things. Some of the things they will make decisions on include road paving, repair, funding, budget and everything that goes on within the township,” Seevers said.
