Jeeps fend off East for spot in NB title game

Lance Swords went off for a game-high 23 points as South Webster defeated East in the first of two semifinals of the 2012 New Boston Holiday Classic.


Levi Cook and Andrew Salisbury each reached double figures in the win for the Jeeps, scoring 15 and 12 respectively. Patrick Bias led the Tartans with 21 and Justin Crager chipped in with 10.


South Webster will take on the winner of the Ashland (Ky.) Rose Hill Christian-New Boston contest for Saturday’s championship. The loser of the game will face East in the consolation game.

Valley 57, Clay 30

Valley started its first weekend of back-to-back games on the right foot with a 57-30 road win at Clay.

Hayden Dunn was the only player in the game to reach double figures as his 20 points paced all scorers in the win. Tony Whitt and Michael Schmidt had six for the Panthers.

The Indians are back on the road Saturday to face Unioto. Clay returns to action in 2013 to host East.

Minford 63, Portsmouth 51

Austin McBee and Jared McCray combined for 44 of Minford’s points Friday night to defeat host Portsmouth 63-51 in a boys nonconference meeting.

McBee led all scorers with 23 and McCray added 21 in the win. Cody Stapleton, who transferred from Portsmouth, added 12.

Jayllen Carter led the Trojans with 13 points. Alex Dickerson finished with a dozen and Ky’re Allison added 10.

Portsmouth goes on the road next Friday to face Gallia Academy. The Falcons host Northwest.

Visiting Fairland used a 20-of-29 performance from the free throw line in the game to aid the Dragons late in a 53-50 win over Wheelersburg in Friday’s nonconference game.

Eddie Miller led the Pirates with 14 points, Derek Moore had 13 and Dylan Miller added 11. Wheelersburg hosts South Webster in a Jan. 4 SOC II battle.

With eight people taking their first flight in their lives Friday morning, jet lag did not prove to be a deterrent Friday for Portsmouth as the Trojans advanced to the semifinals of the KSA Events tournament with a 38-33 win over Huntington Beach (Calif.) Ocean View 38-33 in Orlando.

Peighton Williams led all scorers with 14 points in the win. Portsmouth will take on Louisville (Ky.) Kentucky Country Day, which won 40-38, in Saturday afternoon’s semifinal game.
