It was reported last week that Scioto County was considering legal action against the Super 8 Motel on U.S. Route 23 in Portsmouth for not paying a mandatory bed tax. Officials with the motel report they have made arrangements to pay the tax.
According to information provided by the Scioto County Commissioners, the Super 8 Motel has not paid the tax over the last 18 months and over the last four years, payments haves been sporadic.
According to Super 8 Manager Randy Odell, “this is the first we’ve heard of this (bed tax). No one has called me about this. The first I heard about it was in the newspaper.”
Messages left for Odell were not immediately returned before the first report was published.
Odell said he talked to one of the Clay Township Trustees and arrangements have been made for payment.
“When I called the township trustees they were showing we owed $1,300 for this month. We wrote a check and they are coming to pick it up,” Odell said.
He said a check was given to the township for $8,956, “that should catch us up until the beginning of 2012 and I’ve made arrangements with the township to pay for the rest of this year (2012) next month,” Odell said.
Tim Hines, a Clay Township Trustee confirmed a payment was made to the township from the motel.
“The bed tax is (something that’s) paid to the township with the (Portsmouth-Scioto County) visitors bureau and non-profits sharing part the money that comes from it,” said Tom Reiser, Scioto County Commissioner.
According to the Ohio Department of Taxation, the lodging tax, “is paid by the operators of hotel, motels, rooming houses and other facilities providing lodging accommodations for transient guests. In 2006, the most recent year for which data is available, 61 counties, 130 townships and 174 municipalities (in Ohio) have levied a lodging tax. Excluding the 11 counties with special lodging taxes, rates ranged from one percent to six percent.”
