Troy Eddleman of Wheelersburg joined the Portsmouth Police Department this week after graduating officer training in Columbus on Dec. 21.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity. Lots of great things are happening there. Chief (Robert) Ware is doing a lot of new and exciting things. He’s really worked with the community and mayor, and from my understanding he’s getting a lot of feedback. It’s an exciting time to be joining,” Eddleman said.
Originally from Napa, Calif., where his father worked as an arson investigator and his brother was a sheriff’s deputy, Eddleman married a Wheelersburg woman in 2010 and moved to Scioto County where he started working dispatch at the Ironton Police Department for nearly two years.
In August he was hired by the Portsmouth Police Department as a new officer, conditional upon his completing the Basic Peace Officer Class from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy in Columbus. After 16 weeks, Eddleman graduated his training Dec. 21 and was co-recipient of the top driving award for Class 128. On Monday, he will pin on his badge and take to the streets for his first day with the Portsmouth Police Department.
“Portsmouth Police Department is probably one of the most professional police departments on the river, just about anywhere here in southern Ohio. I wanted to join one of the best and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity,” Eddleman said.
Chief Ware said Eddleman’s position is funded through the General Fund, and there are still five vacant positions within the department. He said a civil service test has been given, and the department has a list of qualifying applicants from which they could choose.
“Where we are now is waiting to see if city council is going to approve a budget that will fund those positions,” Ware said.
Fully staffed, Ware said, the department has 41 officers. With Eddleman they still only have 36.
