PDT Staff Report

Portsmouth Daily Times staff writer Ryan Scott Ottney has received the 2012 Media Honor Roll award from the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA). Ottney was nominated by the Scioto County Career Technical Center and this is his second time receiving the award.

The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools. Media representatives from more than 100 Ohio newspapers and radio and television stations were honored by their local school districts.

Criteria for selection by the local school districts include the media representative’s efforts to get to know the superintendent, board president, and district mission and goals; report school news in a fair, accurate and balanced manner; give a high profile to positive news about schools; visit the schools; and maintain a policy of “no surprises” by sharing information with school officials.

“OSBA is pleased that so many school districts around the state participated in the 2012 Media Honor Roll program,” said OSBA Executive Director Richard Lewis. “OSBA joins those districts in congratulating the honorees and thanking them for fairly and accurately reporting on the successes of students, teachers and school boards, as well as conveying the many challenges they face.”

The Scioto County Career Technical Center and the OSBA have each passed board resolutions in recognition of Ottney’s achievement, and his name is published among a list of winners in the October 2012 issue of OSBA’s Journal magazine.

Ottney has a B.A. in English with a journalism minor from Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, and has been a staff writer for the Portsmouth Daily Times since 2006. He previously received the OSBA Media Honor Roll award in 2010, after being nominated by 11 local school districts along with the South Central Ohio Educational Service Center. Ottney also received the Infinity Award from Lifeline of Ohio in 2009 for excellence in news reporting on issues of organ and tissue donation.
