New Boston businesses set to close

Several businesses within the village of New Boston have announced their intentions to close.
It was confirmed by Staples officials that the New Boston location would be closing. Earlier this year the Staples Corporation announced they would be closing 30 stores in America in an attempt accelerate growth.
According to a Horizon Health Care official, they will close also close. Fashion Bug has also indicated they will be closing their New Boston location.
In an e-mail Thursday, Karen Pevenstein Manager, Public Relations released a statement.
“I can confirm the store in New Boston is closing. I don’t have any further details to share at this time,” she said.
She also said there are about a dozen people that currently work at the location.
According to Staples.com, “Staples, Inc. the world’s largest office products company and second largest internet retailer, announced that it is embarking on a strategic plan to better serve the needs of its customers and accelerate growth. Staples will integrate its retail and online offering, increase investment in its online businesses, reorganize its operations, implement leadership changes, initiate a multi-year cost savings plan, and restructure its International Operations.”
Staples Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ron Sargent addressed the future of the company in a released statement.
“Our vision is to establish Staples as the single-source product authority for millions of businesses,” Sargent said. “We are building on the strengths that are the foundation of our success by focusing on five key priorities: accelerate growth in our online businesses; fully integrate retail and online; improve retail store productivity; restructure our International Operations; and return cash to stakeholders.”
According to a legal notice that appeared in the Thursday, Dec. 6 edition of the Portsmouth Daily Times, “on Nov. 20 Horizon Health Care, Inc., an Ohio corporation, having its principal office at New Boston, by a resolution of its shareholders, elected to dissolve and wind up its affairs and certificate of such dissolution was filed in the Office of the Secretary of State on Nov. 21.”
According to a Horizon Health Care official they will close by the end of the year.
Fashion Bug joins Horizon Health Care and Staples in announcing their intentions to close up shop in New Boston.
Fashion Bug is owned by Ascena Retail Group Inc. which announced in June they would be closing all of its remaining 600 Fashion Bug locations.
While three businesses announced their departures, one businesses recently announced their opening in InfraMetals.
Earlier this month, officials with the Southern Ohio Port Authority (SOPA) and InfraMetals signed an agreement to purchase land in New Boston for the construction of a new $13 million steel distribution plant.
Once in operation the company is anticipated to employ 60 people.
“I think a lot of this is due to the economy, that’s what we’re being faced with. The only way business are going to be able to continue is to see growth,” said Jim Warren, Mayor of New Boston. “InfraMetals is bring a lot of hope into New Boston. It’s taken five or six years for it to come into reality. I guess we will be closing that deal next Friday.”
Other businesses have announced their relocations into New Boston.
After 28 years at its location on Court Street in Portsmouth, the South Central Ohio Educational Services Center (SCOESC) will soon be leaving the city and moving its operation to the former Glenwood High School building in New Boston.
Also moving into the village is Automania. After 23 years in Portsmouth it is moving to New Boston this summer.
Currently on Gallia Street in Portsmouth, Automania is a local automobile stereo and customization business. The business has been featured in magazines such as “Car Audio,” “Truckin Magazine,” “Hot Rod Magazine,” and more.
