Salvation Army begins holiday drive

The one event that most reminds area residents that the holiday season is here is the kickoff of the Salvation Army bell-ringing season.
“It’s Friday (today) at Kroger, here in Portsmouth, at 4 p.m.,” Lt. Mark Ferreira of the Salvation Army said. “We are going to be placing Dave Pack and Mike Glockner up in the (Portsmouth) Fire Department truck, high above the store, until we manage to raise $1,000.” Ferreira said The Chamber of Commerce will begin the annual ritual by being the first to ring the bells, as they have for many years.
Ferreira said the Salvation Army volunteers will be giving out coffee and hot cocoa.
“We’ll have some live music,” Ferreira said. “We are expecting to have Santa Claus, and some other things going on that day, a couple of surprises as well.”
Ferreira said the goal for this season is $90,000. Last year’s efforts raised $87,000.
“We’re fairly confident that we will be able to make this year’s goal,” Ferreira said. “And we will be working hard to do it. We expanded to a couple of new locations, but we think it will take a very strong effort to make it happen.”
