Scioto County Commissioner Tom Reiser announced on Thursday his intentions to retire at the end of the year.

Reiser was trailing opponent Doug Coleman in the unofficial count of the November General Election by only 304 votes (14,696 to 14,392), and according to the Scioto County Board of Elections, there are still 1,500 provisional ballots left to be counted. If Reiser wins re-election after the votes are certified on Monday, he will continue to draw retirement but he will start his newly elected term.

Reiser’s retirement will be effective Dec. 31, and if re-elected his new term will begin Jan. 1.

“When you get fired or you loose an election your next step is retirement. You just have to go through the steps to retire. This is effective at the end of my term,” Reiser said.

According to a report issued by Ohio Secretary of State John Husted, 454 outstanding absentee ballots left to be counted and 1,050 outstanding provisional ballots left to be counted. That’s 1,504 ballots left to be counted in Scioto County. When asked what if the provisionals come back in his favor Reiser appeared skeptical.

“The chance of that happening are about the same as having a 95 degree day tomorrow,” he said.

Reiserhas made it clear that he is not conceding the election but, “if I were to win the election, that’s a new term.” He has been a commissioner for the last 12 years. He is also a retired educator from Scioto County.

The Scioto County Board of Elections is scheduled to meet on Monday, Nov. 19 to count remaining ballots and certify election results. If the remaining provisional ballots favor Reiser he will join Scioto County Clerk of Courts Lisa White-Novinger, Auditor David Green, and Sheriff Marty Donini as elected county officials who have retired and then been rehired to the same position.
