A newly formed group, ‘“Take Back Mound Park,’” met at the park Saturday to launch their first cleanup effort. Though the crowd was small in number, their purpose was a major undertaking.

Randy Blankenship, a parent living near the Mound Park area, decided to formulate the organization when she saw the excessive debris in the park.

Blankenship said that her daughter’’s play time was hindered by garbage, such as beer cans and soda bottles on the ground.

“”My daughter would be so disappointed when we would have to turn back around and go home,”” Blankenship said.

According to Blankenship, various types of drug paraphernalia was discovered at the park at times.

“”It got to the point that I had to tell my daughter that I could not take her to Mound Park anymore,” ”Blankenship said.

That was the turning point for Blankenship, that is when she said decided to take a stand a do something about it.

“”What we are trying to do today is have a big cleanup day,” she said. “We were also hoping to repair some of the wood structures, but was not able to get started in the capacity just yet.”

Blankenship said she decided to utilize social media to spread the word about her intentions to start the “Take Back Mound Park” organization. She said she has at least 240 Facebook friends on the page which she formed to raise awareness.

“I have been getting a lot of feedback from a lot of people who expressed concern and said they wanted to help out. I am a little disappointed that all of them did not come out to help today,”” Blankenship said.

Scott Malone, a local resident said he has strong ties to Mound Park, and wanted to extend a helping hand to Blankenship’’s effort.

“”It’s important to give back to the community,” Malone said. “I was a part of the original builders of Mound Park, I was in Cub Scouts and we helped to construct the park.”

Malone also said that he was instrumental in helping to to coordinate a cleanup for the park as an Eagle Scout.

“”So now having children of my own, it is important to teach them to give back to the community,”” Malone said.

Blankenship said she is appreciative to her mother, Teresa Clark, and her friend, Carie Wallace, and the rest of the community members who come out Saturday to help clean up, despite the cold weather.

Blankenship said she is not going to give up and will continue to host meetings and cleanup efforts for the park.

This is like an annual event and the X-mayor Kalb, current sitting 4th Ward Councilman Kalb, and his wife have a 501 3c for Mound Park and get money for the maintenance of Mound Park, so what's with that.

Actually it fits in with the City Government, THEY get your taxes, fines and fees, but you still have to maintain your own public property for THE CITY.

Only in America, and Scioto County, but no one comes forward to rid us of this corruption, making good bad and replace the corrupt incompetent leaders.

Wake up Ptown........

Actual this is the first time this group has sponsored a clean up day and Ex mayor Kalb was not involved. Mrs Kalb attended and opened the shelter house building for the event. Also a fact most people in Portsmouth have confused is that the Kalb's are only responsible for the BUILDINGS and it is actually the fact that Portsmouth city is broke much like its residents, that has effected the park. Also the lack of responsibility of the community for their own park. A lot of hard work went into this little event and I believe community support rather than targeting individuals would be more helpful.

Oi, you seem to cover only paragraph 1, to get to your agenda, and even then you don't cover paragraph 1 totally, fully, you just accept it apparently, own it, the failures and we can't help our selves??

And you seem to lay down and play dead on the management and administration of the city like it's all our fault and we can't do anything about it, poor us, it's just a pity party. Low self esteem? What's with that.

You like to discount all the issues by attacking the one issue of persons handling the buildings with a 501 3 c when it should be the city responsibility and it has not been like that for decades when they had the money supposedly? What's with that?

Like that park that they finally fixed up in Sciotoville that went for decades, when they had money, without repair and upkeep, and by the way, if it where not for that Recalled Mayor, who started the renewal, it would still be in the bad shape it was in for decades.

They are spending money like it's going out of style, even with the Adult Supervision from the State of Ohio which appears not to be much better at their adult supervision. Good thing Kasich is privatizing the state government, like Ptown did with the SOGP.

Keep on being a part of the problem not the solutions. Partner. KeMo Sabe.

Yadda, Yadda, Yadda, poor us.......

How about paragraphs 2 and 3???? Above your security level, comprehension levels?
