Hurricane Sandy, deemed by some the “Frankenstorm,” has and will continue to leave a lasting impact along the East Coast. Locally, the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has deployed two volunteers to help with the aftermath of the storm.

According to Eli Allen, Disaster Services Coordinator with the Ohio River Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, the deployed volunteers are Tom Lykins and Tom Frazier.

“Right now they (Lykins and Frazier) are responding to Hurricane Sandy and will be working in the areas of shelter operations and health services,” Allen said. “They are expected to be deployed for about three weeks.”

He said Lykins and Frazier have been deployed as Red Cross volunteers in the past.

“Tom Frazier has been involved with most of the major hurricanes and natural disasters since (Hurricane) Katrina including Ike, Gustav and many others. Tom Lykins has recently returned from responding to help with Hurricane Isaac,” Allen said.

According to information provided by the Red Cross, “more than 1,300 disaster workers have been deployed to 16 states. Workers have come from all over the country to help those affected by the storm. The Red Cross has 170 emergency vehicles are ready to respond and more than 230,000 ready-to-eat meals have been sent into the area.

As of 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 30, the Red Cross opened and managed 258 shelters across 16 states with nearly 11,000 overnight residents. The Red Cross expected the number of shelters to increase over the coming days.

The Red Cross is encouraging people to download its Hurricane App and First Aid App to have emergency information available on people’s smart phones.
