PDT Sports Report

After 10 weeks of making opponents respect them, the Valley Indians finally are getting the recognition from the voters.

In the final Associated Press poll released Monday, Valley (10-0) jumped from 11th to eighth in Division V. The Indians claimed their second outright SOC II championship in as many years last Friday when they defeated rival Minford 7-0 in Lucasville. Valley will enter next season with a 20-game regular season winning streak.

The Indians will be one of seven area schools to be playing in this weekend’s first round of the OHSAA playoffs. Valley will welcome Coal Grove Saturday night for the second time this season. In the first matchup, the Indians won 34-18.

Friday night starts playoff action in Division IV as Minford hosts Piketon in a Week Three rematch that was a 19-14 game that went in favor of the Falcons. Also that night, Ironton — which held a top five spot in the Division IV polls for the early part of the season — hosts Bloom-Carroll and Symmes Valley travels to Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans for a Division VI contest.

Also in Saturday’s Division V contests, Wheelersburg entertains Baltimore Liberty Union and Oak Hill prepares for Jeromesville Hillsdale.

There were shakeups in the top of both Division I and Division II polls as Cleveland St. Ignatius and Toledo Central Catholic were defeated for the first time over the weekend. Lakewood St. Edward, which defeated St. Ignatius, and Cincinnati Turpin take over as the poll champions in the divisions. The Fighting Irish were defeated by Toledo Whitmer, who jumped to third in Division I.
