James Drake, 75

James Paul Drake, 75, of Portsmouth, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born Sept. 10, 1937, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Azil Edward and Sarah Mabel Goad Drake.

Jim was a member of First Christian Church. He retired from Southern Ohio Correctional Facility as director of food service after 25 years of service, and he also retired from Speedway of Lucasville. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeye and Portsmouth Trojan football fan, and never missed a chance to cheer his teams on to victory. Jim was an Army veteran and a 1958 Portsmouth High School graduate.

Surviving are his wife, Jessie Bowles Drake, whom he married in Portsmouth, April 25, 1964; his daughter Jami Sue (Edward) Wise of Portsmouth; a sister, Betty (Sal) Mastandrea of Hebron, Conn.; a grandson, Paul Edward Wise; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Richard, Donald and David Drake; and two sisters, Virginia Bromley and Joyce Drake.

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Saturday at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth with Chaplain Jason Coriell officiating. Interment will be in Rushtown Cemetery with military graveside rites by the James Dickey Post #23 Honor Detail.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from noon until 1 p.m.

In honor of Mr. Drake’s service to our country, the flag of the US Army will fly at the funeral home Saturday.
