Drug addiction continues to be the leading cause of crime in Scioto County. A New Boston man has reportedly told Portsmouth police he broke into a house and stole a safe to support his drug habit.

According to the police report, officers made contact with Joseph D. Easter, 19, of 3201 Rhodes Ave., Apt. 5, who confessed to entering a house on Coles Boulevard and removing a safe.

Officers said Easter advised them he broke the safe open with a hammer and sold the contents to an “unknown male.” He then reportedly told them he threw the safe in the river because he didn’t “want anything to do with it,” after the contents were sold.
