More than 300 people are expected to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, set for Saturday, Sept.22. The walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. at 121 Market Street in Portsmouth.

Alzheimer’s is a disease affecting the brain, slowly destroying one’s memory and all cognitive skills and abilities. An estimated 5.1 million Americans suffer from symptoms of the disease which typically manifest after age 60.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association, and is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

The Association’s stated goal is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance and support for all affected and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. The organizations vision is to live in a world without Alzheimer’s disease.

The walks are held annually in more than 600 communities across the country and are open to participants of any age.

Amy Horn, Special Events and Donor Services Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association, said that she is looking forward to the walk to make the community aware of the Alzheimer’s Association’s existence.

“We want to make sure that the people in Portsmouth and Scioto County know that the Alzheimer’s Association is here to help them,” Horn said.

According to The National Institute on Aging, research shows that 10 percent of people over age 65 have Alzheimer’s disease, including nearly 50 percent of people over age 85.
