Despite pleas from Wade Bales’ wife, his father, and Bales himself, Judge William T. Marshall has ordered him back to prison to serve out the remainder of his sentence because of a probation violation.

In May, Marshall ruled Bales, 25, of 67 Jane Lane, in Stout, violated his parole by having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl. The Scioto County Probation Department says Bales’ consensual sexual relationship with the underage girl was in direct violation of the rules established when he was released from prison.

At Wednesday’s sentencing, Shelly Bales said putting Wade Bales back in prison would be a hardship on his family.

“I don’t mean to be selfish, but the biggest impact will be on me,” Shelly Bales said. “I am a full time nursing student. I drive two hours a day, five days a week to try to receive my education, which is approximately 55 to 60 hours a week dedicated to school.”

She went on — “How am I supposed to continue my nursing career without my husband? One thing I do have to say is that prison has proven to be unproductive to Wade.”

Bales then asked Marshall to consider a recommendation by a psychiatrist that he receive more intense treatment.

“Yes, Wade has done wrong, but I am depending on you, your honor, to reinstate his probation to allow him to get the proper treatment he needs,” Shelly Bales said. “Wade and I love each other and are best friends.”

Mark Bales, pastor of Minford Church of the Nazarene and Wade Bales’ father, told Marshall God would judge the situation.

“I think there has been a misunderstanding, highly, that I have enabled or been behind some of Wade’s actions,” Mark Bales said. “That is very, very unfair. It’s very false. And even people in our own church have made those statements. I would never think about that, and here’s why - first of all, I would never envision my young boys when they were laying in my arms to be in a situation like that - and I don’t think you would either.”

He said he was called by God to pastor the church and would not jeopardize the people in that church - “that are either going to heaven or hell.”

“I want to say this, you might have the final say today, but there will be a day when the truth will come out,” Mark Bales said. “Wade has done wrong, I agree. But I will tell you this - I have been reading the paper, and I have seen print about a quarter-of-an-inch tall when someone dies, such as the poor old firefighter down on (U.S.) 52. And then I have seen Minford Nazarene highlighted, and I don’t appreciate it. God will have the final say. And I’m speaking to every single person in this room. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I will tell you this - Wade will end, he will prove to you through through his battles - through his fears - through him going back for three years, that you won’t even consider changing. But I will tell you this - he will come back stronger. He will be stronger for it because I know that between those ears there is good.”

Wade Bales repeatedly begged Marshall to give him more probation time and more intense sex addiction treatment, at one point disputing Marshall’s assertion that he had sent him to the best treatment program in the state, SEPTA.

“I don’t want to be disrespectful by no means,” Wade Bales said. “But the upbringing that I had, and if no one has been to SEPTA, then no offense - you don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Bales complained he had limited counseling and he told Marshall - “we had a homosexual teaching us about sexual awareness. And it was more aggravating than it was anything.”

Assistant Scioto County Prosecutor Joe Hale went through the series of charges and events that highlighted the case.

Hale said the first case involved a 14-year-old girl, who, like the 16-year-old, was involved in the church his father pastors and he attended.

“We gave him a break by letting him plead to a first degree misdemeanor,” Hale said. “He was put on probation. He was given two 180-day sentences that were hanging over his head. While he was on probation for that offense, we get a new case, and that is the case we’re dealing with for revocation of probation here today. That case involved Mr. Bales taking a picture of his penis and texting it, or to use a modern word, sexting it to a minor that he had also met in his church and that he was making romantic overtures to.”

Bales’ attorney Mike Mearan made reference to his not breaking the law, which drew a response from Marshall, who had repeatedly warned that the case was not about breaking the law, but about violation of his probation.

“This is not about a crime. This is about violation of his probation in which I specifically told him to have no contact with the youth of the area,” Marshall said. “He knew what that meant, and because those other agencies didn’t do anything, and they had no jurisdiction to do anything because that girl was 16 years old. You know that was a misleading statement because they did not have jurisdiction.”

In the end, Marshall revoked Bales’ probation and ordered him to serve the remainder of his sentence, which officials said, after being given credit for time served, will be approximately 1,175 days. The alleged victim, sat quietly next to her parents in the front row of the proceedings, which were held before a packed house.

So it is the devils fault that this guy had sex with a 16 year old girl? Really??

Also, what does this sentence fragment mean? Quote "GOD IS NO RESPECTER PERSON WE HAVE ON JUDGE AND IT IS GOD I AM SURE THAT OTHERS HAVE DONE JUST LIKE WADE AND IT NEVER MADE THE FRONT PAGE OF THE PAPER BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT A FAMILY OF GOD" Does it mean that God has done what this wade guy did?

People wonder why christians get such a bad reputattion?

breeze76,

It's called a higher bar. Wait lets see what they Bible, God says about that.

1 Cor. 4:2 - "Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful." Hmm, the reverse of a get out of jail free card if you have faith???

Now the Bible quotes would not have been invoked if the Good Father and others had not invoked the Scriptures, God Says, thinking they can skate free like the Good Father probably does with (Runs) His (God's) faithful Flock?

The "Bales family" attitude is exactly why my family only attended their church a couple times while it was at the old location! Thankfully for my daughter! Mark has always had complete control of his church, AND knew the exact terms of Wades early release. Yet still allowed him to work with the youth?! That IS negligible ! But it's the judge, prosecutor, press coverage, inadequate counseling, the girls and their parents? If any of these girls were my daughter, I'ld be suing the church and Mark Bales also! And an "eye for an eye"?We live under new testament law, not old!How does this apply to the courts decision on his violation?"God will have his final say"? You're using "church speak" to threaten "every single person in this room". Sounds like God did have his say. You must obey the laws of the land or face the consequences!

Very Well Said. thats 100% true, nothing else even needs to be said,i believe everyone who has any sense at all should come to that same conclusion, just because someone goes to prison and then re-offend once they are out doesnt mean the system failed.there is a reason prisons exist in this society, other than to punish someone for a crime, they are also very reliable in the sense of providing protection to our areas youth, its hard to commit these sexual crimes that this sex offender has committed when your behind a set of bars for 1,175 days,The fathers in this area who happen to have a daughter can sleep soundly these next couple of years knowing that there is 1 less sex offender out there on our streets, and since this case has hit not only local papers but newspapers state wide and the local news, more citizens will become aware of Mr.Wade Bales and everything/everyone related to this case, and in turn, help them to become more vigilant to protect their loved ones.prayers go out to "ALL" the families involved, his actions are his and his alone, you cannot blame Mark for Wade's actions, nor for trying to protect him and standing by his side,it is his son after all.

I'm sorry, but I would hate to admit that I depend on a sex addict to keep me going to finish with my education. If i knew my husband sent a picture of his private parts to a teenagers' phone, he would be gone from my home in a heartbeat. Like Wade's father said "an eye for an eye" in the article - Wade will ALSO be judged for his actions. From how I read the article, the entire Bales family acts as if everyone else is to blame for what has happened, except Wade Bales (the counselors were no good, etc.). I think Mr. Bales now has some time to sit in jail and contemplate his actions - just where he should be for his dispicable behavior!

The Bales family are good people. I think if we would put ourselves in their situation we would want the best for our child also.I dont think any parent wants their child in prison no matter what. They love him, so cut them some slack. Im not saying what was done is ok but, I think this family has been attacked enough. The parents raised this boy in a christian home, he made these decisions on his own not from the help of the parents. If we have never been in their situation we should not throw stones. We are not to judge him or his family, just as Wade will be judged for his actions we also will be judged for ours.

buddy7,

And your point is, it's not just parent and child, the Father allowed, permitted, empowered, enabled his son to be in a situation he can't handle. The Father is the Priest of the Church, responsible for his flock, HELLO.....and his son. Pretty heavy lifting.

For the Christian, who believes the Bible is God's Word:

Luke 17:1&2 - "...But woe to that person through whom they come..." Things that cause people to sin. Daddy, County Solicitor, Public defendant attorney (Mearan), and many more. It takes a village to help sin??? Hah....

Matt. 18:6 - 'if anyone causes these little ones who believe in me to sin..." Millstone, Neck, Depths of the sea.

Now that's what God says, And by the way, God has grace, Caesar does not. Hello.

What Caesar says is different and even Christians must give unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Ain't that in the Bible too? Matt. 22:21........oops...

Big Irresponsibility being a Christian, and a Father, and a Priest of the Faithful, Whew.....

The Peter Principle claims, ".....advance to their highest level of competence, are then (achieve or) promoted to a level where they are incompetent,.....

Now, who has not sinned, throw the first stone, ain't that Christianity something else?
