The Markley-Doyle Band performed live at the Southern Ohio Museum Friday, with sounds of music which brought the museum to life. One of the special features of The Markley-Doyle Band is that one of its members is a Portsmouth native, Hilda Doyle, who has playing acoustic music for over 30 years.
Hilda Doyle is known for her unique acoustic style, but has proven to be a versatile musician, with a music ranging from Celtic tunes to jazz, gracing instruments such as the banjo, and mandolin.
The Markley-Doyle Band is composed of members of two bands, The Ladies of Longford and Lone Raven. The merging of the bands allows them to offer configurations from a quartet to an octet. The Ladies of Longford is a band formed by Hilda Doyle which debuted in 2001, which includes Doyle’s two daughters, Stephanie Doyle, and Heather Fraser. The Ladies of Longford is an all-female band which plays traditional and contemporary music with their own unique Celtic tunes.
The Markley-Doyle Band is known for its eclectic blend of traditional Celtic, bluegrass, folk and acoustic music. Though they are known most for their Celtic repertoire, the band can also perform in other genres at any given request. The five-part vocal harmonies are one of the band’s strengths with the fluidity of there voices accenting one another.
The band travels extensively to perform from concert halls, to outdoors festivals and are constantly in demand to give their audiences more.
The band Lone Raven quintet utilizes an electric blend of the Celtic sounds also. Lone Raven is quite diverse in the range of instruments which they put to great use on the stage with over 20 instruments on stage. Their music has been called “Gypsy Fiddle Tunes”, and “Firey Irish Reels.” Lone Raven also possesses an award-winning guitar player, Neil Jacobs.
With skillful, talented musicians possessing vast backgrounds such as those of The Markley-Doyle Band all working together on stage, it makes a musical conglomeration which would be considered by many to be compelling.
