Lewis County, Ky., Judge-Executive Thomas Massie has resigned effective midnight Saturday.

In an interview with the Associated Press Massie said he was resigning to focus on his 4th District congressional campaign. As a Republican, Massie will face Democrat William R. “Bill” Adkins in the November General Election for the 4th Congressional District seat.

Massie submitted his resignation letter to Gov. Steve Beshear, who will appoint a successor.

According to Ben Harrison, Chairman of the Lewis County Republican Party, the county fiscal count meet on Tuesday and appointed magistrate Milt Stanfield to serve as interim county judge executive.

“He will serve as interim judge-executive until the governor’s appointee takes office. It’s likely the governor will make his appointment in the next week or two,” Harrison said. “Since Thomas resigned before August 6th that triggers a special election in November, for which each party will chose their own nominees.”

Harrison said the county Republican party will meet in the next two or three weeks to choose a nominee for the November special election.

According to www.thomasmassie.com, “In 2010, Massie won the race for Lewis County Judge Executive.”

The 4th Congressional District is comprised of Greenup, Lewis, Bath, Boone, Boyd, Bracken, Campbell, Carroll, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Gallatin, Grant, Harrison, Henry, Kenton, Mason, Nicholas, Oldham, Owen, Pendleton, Robertson, Scott and Trimble counties.
