Fundraisers have long been the financial backbone for youth and high school sports teams. Few fundraisers have had the creative flare the Portsmouth girls basketball team will utilize to raise money for its trip to compete in the Disney World Holiday Tournament.
The Lady Trojans are selling golf balls that will be dropped from a Life Ambulance helicopter Aug. 18 at Shawnee State Golf Resort. The owner of the ball that lands closest to, or in a specified hole will win $2,000 with the next closest balls winning $1,200, $800 and $500.
“I had seen this method used at other courses I have been at,” Portsmouth girls basketball coach and Shawnee State Golf Resort Professional Tyson Phillips, “We have members at this course that run Life Ambulance and they have been great supporting local fundraiser events.”
The fundraiser is a departure from the typical team-run car wash or bake sale. Phillips said his players liked the unique method.
“They love the idea,” Phillips said. “They are excited about it and right now are going around to friends and family selling the balls and eventually we will expand it out to local businesses.”
The golf ball drop will be sandwiched between two golf tournaments in August. The morning of the ball drop, Aug. 18, there will be an individual, 18-hole stroke play tournament with the top payout at $3,000. The next morning, Aug. 19, there will be an 18-hole two-man blind draw scramble with a top prize of $3,000.
The idea behind the three events is to raise money for the Portsmouth girls basketball team to travel to Orlando Dec. 27 for three regular season games in a holiday tournament.
