The Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District is sponsoring a pharmaceutical collection on Friday, April 27, from 10a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office, 1025 16th St., Portsmouth.
“This will be our second year hosting a pharmaceutical collection event. Sheriff Marty V. Donini has partnered with us this year to make this event possible,” said Dan Palmer, director of the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District.
Palmer said the event is open and free to Scioto County residents who want to properly dispose of medications.
In 2011, 66 vehicles dropped off unwanted pharmaceuticals, which resulted in 55 pounds of pills, two large bags of liquid medications and two containers of sharps/syringes.
“You can dispose of your pills in their bottles. We just request that you remove your name from the bottles,” Palmer said. “We hope that people take advantage of this. I think it’s a good program.”
In October 2011, the Portsmouth Police Department and several community partners collected about 500 pounds of unused and unwanted pharmaceuticals as a part of National Drug Take Back Day. That’s a dramatic increase from the last Take Back event in April 2011, at which 85 pounds of unwanted medication was collected.
