Scioto County Sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Portsmouth man, who is now facing felony theft charges.
According to a press release from Sheriff Marty V. Donini, Carlos Villeda, 26, of Portsmouth has been charged with one count of theft, a fifth-degree felony, and one count of receiving stolen property, a first-degree misdemeanor. Villeda also had a felony indictment warrant on him for burglary.
According to the release, a Wheelersburg woman called 911 and reported that while she was shopping at Kroger in Wheelersburg, a male subject approached her at her vehicle and asked for her shopping cart. According to the report, he grabbed her purse, which she had placed inside the cart, ran across the parking lot, jumped into a vehicle and fled the area.
Deputies also were contacted during this time to respond to 1499 C Ohio 522, where a woman told them someone had stolen a GPS and other items from her vehicle. Donini said the description of the suspected vehicle matched the vehicle from the Kroger report, and during the investigation detectives stopped the suspected vehicle, which led to a search of a motel room at the Royal Inn in Portsmouth. Detectives said they recovered the stolen purse and some of its contents. Detectives said they also recovered the stolen GPS unit at an apartment on Summit Street in Portsmouth. Donini said the suspect had already fled the motel room when detectives arrived and had been on the run.
Villeda is being held without bond and will appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court this morning.
Donini said more charges could be presented later to a Scioto County grand jury. He said the case is still under investigation and is asking anyone with information on the case to contact Detective Jodi Conkel at the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office at 740-351-1091.
