FRANKLIN FURNACE — The Green Local School District received a banner of excellence by the Ohio Department of Education during the school’s Bobcats Night of Pride on Feb. 8.
The district received the banner for earning an “Excellent” rating on the 2010-11 ODE district report card, meeting 20 of 26 total state indicators and earning a 96.4 performance index score.
During the spring primary election next month, the district will ask local voters to approve a 7-mill, $475,000 property tax levy. Superintendent Sandy Mers said the district needs the levy to pass in March to avoid deeper cuts.
“We have a loss of revenue with the continued cuts, and to remain status quo if you look at our five-year forecast we just need operating revenue. It’s not for a special program. No new hires, nothing like that. In fact, through attrition at the end of this year there will be 17.5 positions that have been eliminated through attrition since 2006,” Mers said.
According to the district, if passed in March, a local property valued at $200,000 will pay an extra $490 each year — or $1.34 a day. At the lower end, a property valued at $25,000 will pay an extra $61.25 each year — or 17 cents a day.
