Personnel of the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, the Lawrence Drug Task Force, Coal Grove and Ironton police served search warrants and arrested three people Monday evening for drug trafficking.
Arrested are James Brooks, 62, of 2316 Geswein St., Ironton, Jana Turley, 26, of 303 1/2 Depot St., Coal Grove, and Samuel Alexander, 41, of 2525 South Third St., Ironton.
During the arrests and searches, police recovered more than 400 Oxycontin pills and more than 100 Xanax pills with an estimated street value in excess of $12,000.
"We believe there is a somewhat organized effort from some drug traffickers traveling to Florida pain clinics to obtain pain pills illegally and bringing them back to our tri-state for street sale," said Sheriff Tim Sexton. "We have experienced several recent cases wherein evidence did provide information that clinics in Florida are being frequented by out-of-state people seeking pain medicine for street trafficking purposes. We have been in contact with Florida law enforcement and will continue to share intelligence and facts to further additional investigations that may be occurring within our county."
All three were recently indicted for aggravated trafficking in drugs by the Lawrence County grand jury.
Sexton said there could be additional felony drug possession charges filed against Brooks and Turley for drugs located at the time of their arrests.
The three are incarcerated at Lawrence County Jail and will appear before Lawrence County Common Pleas Court for arraignment at an as of yet undetermined date and time.
