WEST PORTSMOUTH — Over 100 race teams converged on Portsmouth Raceway Park (PRP) Saturday evening, July 16, 2016 for the annual Premier Precast Products Limited Late Model Extravaganza.

With the spotlight on the the Limited Late Model Division, two time reigning PRP track champion, Mike Meyers not only took the checkered flag for the annual Limited Late Model race, but also set fast time in the process.

Although Meyers set fast time, his win was not without a threat. Meyers started at pole position during his heat race, leading every lap to the checkered. He would then get the pole position for the feature, also leading every lap, but faced a last-minute effort by Cameron Logan.

Logan, a Catlettsburg, Kentucky native, positioned himself within striking distance as the leaders rushed into turn three on the final lap. Logan drove into the turn hard and tried going underneath Meyers, but his car would not stick, causing him to crack the throttle, which allowed Meyers to race on to the checkered-flag victory.

Meyers claimed his third win of the 2016 PRP season Saturday and his second in as many weeks. With the win, he claimed a $2,000 race-purse as well as an additional $250 for setting fast time. He is also the only Limited Late Model driver to claim multiple feature wins at PRP this season.

Joe Whitt of Minford won the $250 Hard Charger award after finishing second in the Limited Late Model feature. Whitt passed Logan after Logan’s unsuccesful bid to claim first in the final two turns of the race. He advanced 16 positions in the race, finishing second after starting at 18.

Logan, Jocob Curnutte and Dillon Huron rounded off the top five.

Meyers was not alone with bringing excitement to the crowd at PRP, as the Limited Late Model Division also had a couple of crashes during the evening, leaving some in attendance awestruck.

West Portsmouth’s Duane Pick hit the wall hard, causing his car to roll several times during hot laps. While the crash caused Pick and his vehicle to toss-and-turn, he was able to walk away from the incident without any significant injuries.

Another car would fall victim to the wall, as Fairfield’s John Sizemore slammed into the turn-3 wall at PRP during the first Limited Late Model Heat. Sizemore was taken to a hospital Saturday evening to be evaluated and was reportedly released late that same evening.

Nick Bocook took the checkered for the Late Model feature win. He would be followed by Audie Swartz, Lee Logan, Shannon Thornsberry and Kenny Christy to claim the top five spots.

Erin Vance earned his fifth Modified feature victory this season Saturday evening. Vance never held anything less than first place Saturday starting and finishing in the same spot. Jeremy Rayburn finished second, followed by Jody Puckett in third and Michael Paul Howard and Jim Barnett to finish the top five.

Another repeat winner, Brian Sammons, Jr. took the win in the Sport Mods feature. Allen Gulley, Billy Baldridge, Derek Richmond and Jimmie Spillman filled the remaining spots for top five finishers.

It was a battle of the Pendletons in the Bombers feature, as father Shane Pendleton out-gunned his son Zack Pendleton to win. Mike Drake, Rick Butler and Wayne Hughes rounded up the remaining drivers in the top-five.

PRP will host racing action again Saturday, July 23, 2016, as wingless sprint cars will make their return to the raceway after several years’ absence. Late Models, Modifieds and Bombers will also be on the racing card.
