PORTSMOUTH — Post 23 came up with a big win Friday evening against Waverly’s Post 142 by a score of 12-2.

Post 142 struck first, with Hayden Baker hitting an RBI single, which brought home Minford’s Eli Daniels.

The 1-0 lead would last less than an inning, however, as Post 23 hung five runs on the board in the bottom of the second. Drew Cassidy and Cody Wiltshire both brought runs home in the inning, while Kyle Jenkins would later clear the bases with a 3-run triple.

“As a whole we played great today,” said Post 23’s Coach Matt Miller. “We played relaxed and everyone hit the ball pretty well. Kyle is special to being with, he’s our power hitter. He slumped the last couple games but he definitely found his stroke out there today.”

Jenkins would push two more runs to the plate with a double in the fifth inning. The 6-run inning would spell the end of the game as Post 23 reached the amount needed to institute the mercy rule.

Post 23 sent two pitchers to the mound in the shortened, five inning game: Cody Wiltshire and Jaydren Guthrie. Wiltshire gave up only 1 earned run in three innings while Guthrie threw a no hitter in his two innings of relief.

“They went out and threw strikes. What we found out this year is that if we throw strikes and keep pounding the zone we let the defense do their jobs behind us. That’s the key. Both of them did an excellent job not giving up walks.”

Post 23 will start regional play on Sunday. They will face off against Chillicothe’s Post 62 at 11 A.M.

“We are 1-2 against them this year. I hope we go out there like we did today. First of all, I always want us to have fun. That’s what this is all about. Secondly, we need to throw strikes. As long as we do those two things I am confident in us. We have to keep working, though.”

Miller admits that this summer has been a learning experience for many of his kids. Hard work and dedication are a stable of every program, including legion baseball.

“I think we’ve learned that hard work is going to get them prepared. Not just for us as a team, but individually and for their careers going forward. I want them to make friendships and take those outside of the game of baseball.”
