Shawnee State University will soon be inducting the 2017 Hall of Fame Class during Homecoming Weekend in January. As they days draw closer, Shawnee is currently accepting nominations for possible inductees for the upcoming Hall of Fame ceremonies.

“We have a pretty good idea of who is eligible and who will become eligible,” Shawnee State University Athletic Director, Jeff Hamilton said. “We’ll add to that list with all of the nominees from this year.”

Hamilton said the university is trying to get a jump start on the selection process this year.

Nominees must fit into one of three categories, student-athlete, coach/administrator/staff, or a special category.

To be officially inducted as a student-athlete, a nominee must meet four points of criteria.

First, the student-athlete must have not competed for five years for the university. The student-athlete would have to have had their final intercollegiate athletic competition five years prior to being inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Secondly, the student-athlete must have earned one of the following accomplishments, an all-conference selection, special conference award recipient, NAIA statistical leader, Shawnee State single season and/or career statistical leader, NAIA national award recipient or other accomplishment.

Additionally, the nominee is required to have participated in an intercollegiate program as an upper-classmen, a junior or senior.

Student-athlete nominees are also required to, “exemplify the academics and community standards of Shawnee State University”, according to the requirements listed on Shawnee’s website.

Shawnee does have a limit of student-athlete nominees to be inducted each year, as no more than three individuals will be inducted.

To be inducted in the coach/administrator/staff category, a potential inductee is not eligible until five years after their departure from the university for coaches. They are also required to have coached for at least three seasons for Shawnee.

For administrators and staff, a potential nominee is required to have served at the university for no less than 15 years.

There is no mandate that someone be inducted under the coach/administrator/staff category each year.

The special category also doesn’t require someone to be inducted every year and is reserved for special occasions. The minimum requirement for this category is that an individual must have made a significant contribution to the athletics department, a team, or a special event held by the university.

Special category nominees are eligible upon the recommendation by the Director of Athletics and approved by the Hall of Fame Committee.

All nominations must be received by the August, 1, 2016 deadline.

When making a nomination, Hamilton asked as much information on the nominee be submitted as possible, such as name, sport, qualifications, along with any personal details or recommendations for the nominee.

Submissions are to be e-mailed to [email protected].

Hall of Fame ceremonies will be held during Homecoming Weekend, with the homecoming basketball game being held January, 28, 2016.
