Notre Dame takes sectional title, blanks St. Joseph 4-0

PORTSMOUTH — The Notre Dame Titans will be Chillicothe bound on Sunday, May 15, 2016 to play the Eastern Meigs Eagles of Reedsville, Ohio. The Titans will be making the trip to the V.A. Memorial Stadium as a result of beating the Ironton St. Joseph Central Flyers Tuesday evening.

Notre Dame defeated the St. Joe 4-0 to capture an OHSAA Division IV Sectional Championship and advance to the district semifinal round.

The Titans marched on to a shutout victory over the Flyers. CJ Corns pitched five and one-third innings against St. Joe. He allowed only one hit in the game, while walking three batters.

Corns showed his dominance on the mound as well, as the Notre Dame sophomore racked up 10 strikeouts against the Flyers.

Drew Cassidy came in to relieve Corns and finished out the game. He went through one and two-thirds innings worth of work against St. Joe, surrendering no hits and walking only one batter. Cassidy also struck out one batter.

Notre Dame had success at the plate as well combining for six hits on the evening and scoring in three consecutive innings.

The Titans brought one run across the plate in the third inning. They followed with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, which was then followed by another run in the fifth inning.

Sam Kayser led the Titans in hits Tuesday evening going 2-for-3 at the plate. Kayser drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Brandon Lansing found a way to cross home twice in the game getting a pair of scores.

Corns helped his own cause, as he finished the evening with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring once.

Rist ended up with the loss for St. Joe. He pitched six innings and allowed four runs, all earned, off six hits. Rist avoided walking any of the Titans, while picking up a pair of strikeouts.

McGraw got the lone hit for the Flyers, going 1-for-2 at the plate.

Notre Dame improves their record to 17-6 on the season and have only lost two games since coming back from their trip to Florida during Spring Break.

The Titans will meet the Eagles of Reedsville at the V.A. Stadium in Chillicothe on Sunday evening. First pitch is set for 5:00 p.m. Notre Dame enters the district semifinal round as the first seed, while Eastern is seeded fourth.
