Lady Tigers stop Tartans

SCIOTOVILLE – The East Lady Tartans, who were down by double digits most of the night, managed to lead a huge fourth quarter stand and go on a 15-5 run to start the fourth. Peyton Helphinstine hit three buckets beyond the arc in the quarter as they cut the New Boston lead to just three points at 48-45 with just 3:30 left in the game. New Boston held on, though, responding with their own 12-1 run and finishing the game with a final score of 62-53.

Shay Brown led the game with 31 points for the Tartans. Her and Peyton Helphinstine, who had 20, had all but two of East’s points on the night. East Head Coach Walter Monroe had nothing but praise for his two team leaders.

“At the end of the third we were down by twelve,” said Monroe. “I told them the fourth was going to be our quarter. We haven’t quit all year and we weren’t going to quit then. They came out and played great, offensively and defensively. We just have to do that for all four quarters. I can’t ask for anything more out of Shay and Peyton. They played fantastic. The other girls tried, they were playing according to their roles and they are getting better. I’m really proud of them.”

East played the game with only an eight girl lineup. Starting center Bre Humble was out for the game.

“We’ve lost a bunch of kids this year. I’m proud of them regardless. They don’t quit and that’s just a big life lesson. Don’t quit. These kids only won two games last year. Nobody cared, nobody worked out with them. Nobody practiced with them or set up summer ball. Now they are ready to play. I’m really proud of them. Going forward, I want to teach them to work hard the whole game and have a positive attitude. I’m happy for these kids. They’ve been through a lot and I’m glad I’ve been here for them.”

For New Boston, it’s their second fourth quarter scare in as many games. But, they’ve managed to persevere and finish in the end. Moriah Buckley led the Tigers with 19, and Cammy oiler put in 18.

“I think we started out well in the game. Mariah got to the paint anytime she wanted. She was a forced to be reckon with out there despite battling an illness. I think basketball is a game of runs. It went back and forth on the night but we had a run ourselves at the end and managed to seal it. Cammy saw the floor phenomenally tonight. She hit her foul shots well tonight, too. Ali Hamilton and her were on the same page tonight with the inside out game.”

Ali Hamilton was a focal point of the East defense on the night. They held her to just six points, but she also managed three blocks and double digit rebounds.

“A lot of people know how good Ali is in the post. She’s a team leader, and she did what we needed her to despite the double team. She rebounded well and that’s what we needed tonight. Keanna Day, who is a freshman, was really a spark off the bench for us. She had seven or eight rebounds, nine points and worked so hard for us. I was really proud of her tonight.”

New Boston travels to Ironton to face St. Josephs on Wednesday. Game time is 7:30.

East travels to Franklin Furnace Thursday to face off against the Green Bobcats. Tipoff is 6:00.
