NEW BOSTON – The New Boston Lady Tigers defeated the Wellston Golden Rockets on Monday evening by a score of 55-35. New Boston lead throughout the night, but managed to cement the victory in the second half after a 16-5 run put them up by 20 points.

Wellston made it a priority to guard the paint against Ali Hamilton and the Tigers. They fell in a heavy zone, leaving shooters free for open shots. Mariah Buckley and Eden Howard made the Rockets pay, hitting two early threes and propelling the Tigers to an early 16-9 run. On defense, New Boston denied the ball to Alexis Green and nabbed more than a few steals from their defensive scheme.

Mariah Buckley and Kaylee Stone led the Tigers throughout the night. By the half each had 10 points. Ali Hamilton had her own contributions even with the constant double teams, she added 6 blocks to go with her 9 points on the night. By the end of the half Wellston was keeping with New Boston with a 28-18 score.

In the third quarter, the tempo picked up and it was to the Tiger’s favor. They went on a 16-5 run as Cammy Oiler joined in the scoring effort, putting up 12 points on the night. In the fourth, New Boston went on a quick 9-0 run that all but concluded the outcome of the ballgame. Buckley finished with 12 points, and Stone led all scorers with 14 points.

“I thought our tempo was really high,” said New Boston Head Coach Kayla Wiley. “Our defense got out and forced turnovers, leading to offense on the other end. That’s a great strategy to be able to have.”

“Our shooters came out hot in the start. We cooled off a bit, but by the second half we hit some big shots and started getting the ball in the post. Ali Hamilton was big for us on the defensive end, swatting the ball. Her and Kaylee Stone both had a ton of blocks. Ali had eight assists while fighting through the double team. She did a great job distributing and she ended up getting good looks in the second half because of it.”

“At halftime we just managed to get our legs under us. I told them at the half our shots would start falling and they did.”

New Boston will host St. Joseph’s (Ironton) Wednesday at 6:00 P.M.
