The Waverly girls soccer team came up just short on Monday evening, as Ironton St. Joseph came up with a late to beat the Tigers 4-3.

With just over a minute remaining in the match, the Flyers’ Ophelia Weatherholt found Kaylee Sheridan on a corner kick, and Sheridan found the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

Earlier in the contest, the Flyers took a quick 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals from Lynsey Booker. But Waverly’s Rose Remington kept the Tigers in the game with two goals of her own, one of which came from an assist from Morgan Peterson.

With Waverly still trailing by a goal with less than 20 minutes remaining, Hannah Goodman came up with an equalizer to tie the match at 3-3.

“I was extremely pleased with the way the Waverly girls played tonight. We played very hard and a well fought match,” Chris Murphy said.

In the end, the Tigers gave the Flyers just one too many chances. St. Joes outshot Waverly 16-11 throughout the game.

“I want to compliment Ironton for finishing their opportunities when they had them,” Murphy said.

The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to take on West.
