SCIOTOVILLE — The East Tartans used a furious fourth-quarter comeback — fueled by running back turned quarterback Akia Brown — to defeat the South Gallia Rebels on Friday evening 28-27.

Trailing by a touchdown heading into the fourth quarter, the Tartans (1-0) quickly evened the score when Brown scampered for a 21-yard touchdown run and added the two-point conversion to tie the score at 21.

About a minute later, South Gallia (0-1) quarterback Lance Hutchinson found the end zone from 47-yards out to retake the lead for the Rebels. South Gallia elected to go for the two-point conversion, which failed.

The failed conversion would ultimately come back to haunt the Rebels. On the very next drive, Brown found J.D. Hatcher for a 44-yard catch and run to even the score at 27. Ethan Gifford stepped up, nailed the extra point and gave the Tartans a one point edge in the waning moments of the game.

However, the Rebels weren’t done. With time running short, South Gallia drove all the way down to the Tartan eight-yard line, putting itself in prime position to end the game. However, with a running lane to the end zone open, Hutchinson elected to throw the ball, and was promptly intercepted in the end zone by East’s Deshaun Martin, sealing the game for the Tartans.

The Tartans return to Allard Park next Friday, when they host Fisher Catholic.
