The Notre Dame Lady Titans may have cooled off a little over the holiday break, but they turned up the pressure in time for a victory Tuesday night in a home game against New Boston. Though Notre Dame beat the New Boston Tigers, the a game that was closer than Notre Dame Head Coach JD McKenzie would like.
New Boston started strong, ending the first quarter with an eight point lead. By the end of the first half, however, Notre Dame had taken control of the game. With a record of 9-1 for the season and 7-0 in the conference, Notre Dame continually proves to be a difficult team to beat.
“Our team hadn’t played in 18 days, and it showed early as we had to knock the rust off; we couldn’t buy a bucket,” McKenzie commented. “As the game went on, we were able to crank up the defensive pressure and cause some turnovers and get some easy baskets and that allowed us to dictate what we wanted to do defensively.”
Leading for Notre Dame was star on the court Hagen Schaefer who scored 24 points and also had five rebounds, four assists and four steals. She was followed by another player with momentum, Lexi Smith. Smith also had 14 rebounds. However, on the defense, Katie Dettwiller was a major play.
“Obviously, Hagen and Lexi had big nights offensively, but Katie was big on the boards and did a nice job defensively limiting (Ali) Hamilton from New Boston offensively,” stated McKenzie.
The Tartans have another big game coming, facing the Ironton St. Joseph Flyers on Wednesday. New Boston will face Western at home on Thursday.
