The Wheelersburg Pirates face the Ridgewood Generals at Ed Miller Stadium Saturday night.

The Wheelersburg Pirates had only a moment to celebrate winning the SOC before going to work in preparation of their upcoming playoff game against the Ridgewood Generals.

The Pirates won the SOC outright with their undefeated regular season.

“Winning the SOC is our number one goal every year,” Pirates coach Rob Woodward stated. “It’s an outstanding accomplishment.”

The Pirates finished the regular season in a game against the Portsmouth West Senators with Burg beating West with a final score of 24-14, the final victory that locked in their SOC championship. The Pirates scored a total of 391 points throughout the season.

“I’m pretty proud of our seniors,” Woodward stated.

The Pirate senior leadership has been more than impressive, pulling off several major plays throughout the season. Big offensive plays include Tanner Bivens making a 49-yard touchdown against Valley, Tre Canary and his 37-yard touchdown at Portsmouth West, and Keaton Newsome with a 62-yard touchdown run against Valley. The Pirates have also had major defensive plays, with an ability to run great defense and offense while also having a talent for responding to any strategy their opponents bring.

Wheelersburg has not had an easy road to victory and has an even harder road ahead.

“There are some good teams and good coaches in the conference,” Woodward stated.

The Pirate coach explained that the Pirates have faced their upcoming opponent and thus somewhat know what they can expect from Ridgewood.

“They’ve made the journey before,” he stated. “We played them in round two of the playoffs last year.”

Wheelersburg also beat Ridgewood 42-21. Woodward stated that he knows Ridgewood will be ready. Ridgewood has lost one game this season against Garaway, who is 11-0.

“We’re going to have ourselves ready as well. Our seniors are extremely focused. They want to make a statement for themselves and their team,” commented Woodward about the upcoming matchup.

These seniors experienced the regional championship and state semi-finals last year, taking Burg into the final four and finally losing 6-36 against Coldwater.

Post season should bring great games every week as high school football giants meet on the field, some for the very first time.

The Pirates and the Generals will have a late start, kicking off at 7:30 at the Ed Miller Stadium in Wheelersburg.
