The South Webster Jeeps unbeaten streak and tournament run ended Wednesday in a Division III Regional Semifinal as the Jeeps fell to the Rosecrans Bishops 1-0 at Logan High School.
South Webster finished the season at 18-1-1, winning a district championship and advancing to its third regional game in school history.
“It is always disappointing to lose at something that you have invested so much time and effort into, but at the same time who can be disappointed with this team and what they have accomplished,” Jeeps head coach Corey Claxon said. “I believe those that saw this game got to see the best effort these guys have ever put forth. They left it all on the field and I am most proud of that. At one point in the game I told our trainer that this game is a battle.
“All in all, we finished the season with an 18-1-1 record with an undefeated regular season. We advanced to the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ for the third time in school history and were so close to advancing to the Regional Final. These guys will certainly go down in history as one of the best soccer teams we have ever had.”
Michael Gibson scored the lone goal of the game in the 83rd minute of overtime.
“Our defense played extremely well the entire game,” Claxon said. “Dom (Holding) marked their key player and shut him down. That player did end up scoring in the overtime, but I can’t really say it was anybody’s fault … “
Offensively, the Jeeps might have been shutout but they had their fare share of opportunites.
“Offensively we had our chances,” Claxon said. “Shane (Zimmerman) is always there for us as a target and as usual he played some great balls in behind the defense. Alek (Blevins) is such a strong and fast player, and he had a couple chances that he got in on the keeper because of his strength and speed. Alek hit one into the side netting that I thought for sure was going to be a goal.”
