The Waverly Tigers came out on top against the Portsmouth West Senators Friday evening, defeating them 19-6. The Tigers started out strong and didn’t turn back, keeping the Senators scoreless through the first three quarters.
On just the fifth play from scrimmage, Waverly quarterback Clayton Howell connected with wide receiver Cade Marquez for a 60-yard touchdown just minutes into the first quarter.
After the Senators first drive resulted in nothing, the Tigers continued their momentum and drove the ball down the field to the 9-yard line. Waverly’s quarterback fumbled the ball and was recovered by the Senators. Again, West failed to get anything going and the result was another three and out.
Senators head coach Ben Johnson said “We had way too many mistakes. The inability to execute when it came down to some of the opportunities we had. We had too many turnovers and penalties in crucial times and just couldn’t make that final play to get things going.”
Once Waverly scored for the second time in the first quarter, things slowed down and the Senators began gaining yards with their run game. Unable to capitalize on the things done well, West continued to fight until the end of the game.
“We moved the ball well against them but we could’ve done better with our pass protection. Defensively we played good besides just three big plays. Take away the three big plays and it’s an entirely different ball game,” Johnson said.
The Senators only points of the night came off of a solid drive by the backfield. The senators ran the ball well all night, and we’re finally able to capitalize off of a good drive with a 2-yard touchdown run from running back Wesley Robinson.
With only just two weeks left, coach Johnson added “we have a lot of young guys that have been working hard all year and they continue to work hard to get better. That’s what we have to do, our young guys have to pick our seniors up and send them out with 2 strong closing games.”
The Portsmouth West Senators look to bounce back next week when they travel to take on Batavia. The game will be played at Batavia high school on Friday October 21, kick off starting at 7.
