McDERMOTT — The History Channel is airing a series of shows on the Hatfields and McCoys feud. Paul Phillips of McDermott has ties to both families, and he is disappointed with the way the story was told.

History.com describes the show as “the true American story of a legendary family feud — one that spanned decades and nearly launched a war between Kentucky and West Virginia. ‘Hatfields & McCoys,’ a three-part miniseries, showcases an all-star cast led by Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton. It chronicles a clash of clans that inspired passion, vengeance, courage, sacrifice, crimes and accusations, while forever transforming the two families and the region they lived in.”

Phillips’ great-grandfather, “Bad” Frank Phillips, was the sheriff in the Hatfield-McCoy fight. In the series, he is played by actor Andrew Howard.

“Nancy McCoy (Paul Phillips’ great-grandmother) originally married Johnse Hatfield. She was the first one to intermix the McCoys and the Hatfields. They had two kids. She got divorced and married my great-grandfather, Frank Phillips, and he adopted the two Hatfield kids. That’s how I got both sides in me,” Phillips said.

Phillips said he heard stories growing up about the feud from his grandfather, Jesse J. Phillips. Those stories differ from what the History Channel portrayed.

“They had my great-grandmother as being a prostitute, and she was no prostitute. On the show Frank Phillips was shot dead on his wedding day,” Phillips said. “Her (Nancy McCoy) wedding dress is on display at the 1810 House from their church wedding. If they did not have any kids how am I here?”

Phillips said his initial excitement about the show diminished after watching it.

“I do not think the show stayed true to the family story or anything close. I DVR’d (digitally video recorded) the show and have already recorded over it. To me it was a joke, I was very disappointed with what was shown.”

Phillips said parts of the show were accurate, however.

“There were bits and pieces of the show that was accurate, but not much.”

He said there are four other direct descendants of the family living in Scioto County: Florida Cade, Frank J. Phillips, Susie Sines, and Timmy Lee Phillips.

The Associated Press reports that the three nights of “Hatfields & McCoys” were the top-rated entertainment telecasts ever for ad-supported basic cable, according to ratings released by the History Channel. Wednesday’s finale of “Hatfields & McCoys” was the most-watched of the three nights, with 14.3 million viewers. According to the History Channel, that makes it the No. 1 non-sports and non-news program ever on ad-supported cable.

Parts one and two of the star-filled drama were right behind with 13.9 million and 13.1 million viewers, respectively.

The six-hour series debut ran May 28 through 30. According to History.com, The series will air again on Saturday, beginning at 6 p.m.

Regarding Frank Phillips' wives/women and his children, the below is provided:

Married Matilda Phillips (1st Cousin) on 12-15 Jun 1878. No Children.

Married Mary Francis Rowe on 17 Sep 1881. Children:

John b.1882

Mary b.1886

Frank b.1890

Pearl b. 1894

Lee b. 1896

Affair with Eva McCoy (never married), but had one child:

Robert Lee b.1884

Married Nancy L. McCoy on 5 Sep 1895. Children:

Elsa b.1889

Jessie b.1892

Flora b.1893

Golden b.1897

Frank also took care of Nancy's previous two children from her marriage with J. Hatfield.

If you look at the dates, Frank had his affair with Eva McCoy while married to Mary Rowe. Frank also had children with Nancy while married to Mary Rowe. Frank had children with Mary Rowe while married Nancy. Frank was not very loyal to his wives during their marriages, but upon his death, he was very loyal to all children and provided for all of them according to his two page hand written will which I have a copy of.

I descend from Frank and Eva McCoy's affair, Robert Lee Phillips. Frank was a wild man with his women and alcohol, but he did take care of his family upon his death.

I would like to hear from other Frank Phillips' descendents. Please contact me at dbrianphillips@hotmail.com. Thanks. Brian Phillips.

Linda, Frank was married to Mary Rowe and had 5 children. He divorced Mary and married Nancy McCoy. Later Mary Rowe Phillips married a Justice.(forgot first name). They had a daughter Ora Justice. I met Ora Justice in the summer of 2000. She shared a picture of her mother and also a photo of my grandmother Elizabeth Phillips Hunt, Jesse James Phillips, and herself just before my grandmother Elizabeth Hunt died.

This guy is a tool. What family story involves the words "your great-grandmother was a prostitute"?

What type of sheltered life has this guy lived? Of course that part could plausibly be whitewashed from your family history.

More of a question...seeking information on the siblings of Frank Phillips. I've been led to believe that a sister of his was my great-Grandmother. Would really like to contact someone in the Phillips family.

As far as the movie goes..we all should just remember that the hollywood types really only care about making money and not if they are correct or not.TAKE CARE

Iknow Bad Frank Phillips did not get killed on his wedding day to Nancy MCcoy .He married again to Mary Cenderella Rowe and had a daughter named Pearl and i can't remember the other sibling's names, but Pearl was my grandmother, she married Jack abshire and lived the rest of her life at Lick Ck ky. I think my great grandfather,(Bad Frank Phillips) should have gotton more recognition in the movie, and also the actor,Andrew Howard.

The show wasnt called Nancy McCoy & Frank Philips. imagine how long the show would've been to give all this detail. On the series it doesn't even show them getting married, shes just there showing off the ring then after the smoke cleared and cotton top was hanged they show him being shot by his own deputy. She was so strong willed that she married the enemy to be a "spy" and turn I'm his family. I dont want to state opinions but what would you call a relative of yours that married someone whom you we're interested in. Or an inlaw who married your relative to turn you and your family in. Then marry the man who was hunting you down. something else that was lost in translation was that the Hatfields had 13 children and the McCoys had16. I don't see all those dissidents huffy and puffy cause of that.

I think this is sad that someone is getting worked up over a TV series. Why? It's TV, what did you expect. The real story is never a seller! Dramatics and stretching of the truth is what makes a movie. If you want what really happened go to the library and research the History books. If you want to watch a great show just watch the series! It was great! Besides you don't hear everyone complaining about the movie Titantic! It was not even close to the real event. Geeez!

first, Nancy Mccoy was not portrayed as a prostitute. i believe it was in the second episode where Jonsy Hatfield is leaving a whorehouse hanging on a prostitute and Nancy comes and takes him back to her place, as part of her plan to avenge her father's murder by Jim Vance. They later marry, Jonsy was in the whorehouse, Nancy was outside. Never in the film was Nancy Mccoy portrayed as a prostitute though she was called a whore by several characters in the film, a not uncommon insult against women by other women, even today.

Bad Frank Phillips was not shot on his wedding day in the film. his shooting by his own deputy was later on, after the feud had been over, and he wrote a book. Nancy was selling the dime novels and he was signing them. then Perry Cline approaches Bad Frank with his fiance from South Carolina (i believe it was SC) so this was months possibly years later, NOT on Frank and Nancy's wedding day.

nancy was not the first to intermingle. there were others previous to hers, check the family tree. also, is the guy in this article a descendant of nancy's children with a hatfield or a phillips?i know he said frank adopted the hatfield children but i was curious. also she wasn't necassarily portrayed as a prostitute, just as a girl in those time who didn't have any one to really take care of her so she had to take care of herself.

This was not about the hatfields and mccoys. This was about a great grandfather being killed in a movie, in a bar.. and his grandmother portrayed as a prostitue. Both of them were portrayed as trash. Would you want your ancestors to be left with that memory because of a movie. They did not do enough research or they would have found out that there were 5 direct desendants living in scioto county. It is sad that our grandchildren have been told and read stories about their great great grandfather bad frank phillips only to be let down because of them having to make the movie look better. I am not trying to start any trouble, never have been, just would like to know how they kill off a great grandfather when his great grandson and other great grandchilren are living. (I feel they did little to no research)

History is history and facts are facts! The movie was not completely accurate and you can tell they did very little research. How would my children's grandfather be here if frank phillips died in a bar right after he married nancy McCoy? This movie made nancy to be a prostitute which is not at all how she was. Also, frank may have been " bad" but he was not as cut-throat as they made him to be. This is why we feel the way we do... How would you feel if you knew the facts and a movie changed the way your family history was viewed.

I thought Nancy was beautiful from the pictures I have seen. Can you family members please provide any info on her. I am very interested in her. She died so young, can you tell me what she died from? I always got that she was very head strong... I am sorry you as a family are upset but I can see why. Anyway, how did she die? Thanks in advance...

You must be related to the McCoys to be that dumb. Skunk Top was scalped by that demon Frank Phillips. Cotton Top was the mentally handicapped young man that was later hung in Pike County by scum that deserve to die. Get your facts straight or don't bother posting!

Of course people aren't going to like how their ancestor was portrayed. The producers and writers did their BEST to get ALL the facts from any sources they could. The plain facts are, the Hatfield's started it and made things even worse. The McCoy boys who killed Ellison Hatfield SHOULD have hanged.. the Hatfields SHOULD have allowed the LAW to take over.

By intervening in place of the law they escalated the feud horribly. Frank Phillips himself was NOT a good guy at all from ALL accounts. Thats why his nickname was "Bad". OH well, these people will get over it. History is History, even if we don't agree with it.

The producers and writers did have both sides of the story (which were different) and they had the facts about Frank Phillips, but decided to tell the story in true Hollywood fashion in order to get the highest ratings. They were successful with over 14 Million viewers. They failed in depicting Frank in a historically accurate account. Frank's motive to go after the Hatfields was not for money, he did it out of loyalty to the McCoy's and because he was deputized by KY Gov Buckner. Your comment that "Frank was NOT a good guy at all from ALL account" is obviously false because you do not know ALL accounts. The movied falsly depicted Frank Phillips at the end of the movie that he died in a bar with Nancy by his side. Frank did die from a gun shot to the leg that had to be amputated to try and save his life, but he died a few days later on July 12, 1898, which was 8 years after the feud. As you can see, the writers knew of this fact of Frank's death prior to this miniseries, but decided making money was more important than telling the truth. It was the Hatfields that gave Frank the nickname of "Bad" because they were scared to death of Frank because they knew he was the only one that would not back down and wanted to see justice. The Hatfields were so scared they left their homes and lived in makeshift wooden shacks in the mountains/caves to hide from Frank. Frank Phillips provided some justice to the McCoy family. This is why he was given credit (at least partial) for ending the feud.

The Feud did NOT last that long. It lasted from 1865 (when Harmon McCoy was murdered by Jim Vance and ENDED in 1890 when Ellison Mounts (cottontop) was hanged for killing Alifair McCoy (child) when she ran out the back of the house. That was the LAST killing. The descendants signed a "Peace Treaty" recently.. but it was just a formality.
