Greenup County Fair this week

The 66th Annual Greenup County (Ky.) Fair is now underway. According to fair officials, attendance has been up in the first three days.

“We had a huge demolition derby Saturday night. We likely have the biggest demolition derby in the state of Kentucky. We had 61 cars participate in this years derby,” said Jay Sizemore, President of the Greenup County Fair Board.

He said 50 cars participated in the 2011 derby. The event this year was the opening activity of the fair on Saturday.

“It did not end till almost 1:30 a.m. It took a long time because there were so many cars. Which is a good problem to have,” he said.

He said all of the vendor spaces for the fair are full and the livestock barns are packed with animals.

On Tuesday night, the Miss Greenup County Fair pageant was held. The results were not available at press time.

Today the Greenup County Fair will feature a hog and feeder pig show and showmanship from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Baby Miss and Baby Mister Little Miss and Little Mister Greenup County Fair pageant will be held at 3 p.m. The Greenup County Horse Show will take place at 5 p.m., and the Miss Junior and Miss Teen Greenup County Fair pageant at 6:30 p.m.

At 5 p.m. on Thursday, the Greenup County Fair Glitz and Glamour Pageant will take place. with the B and M Motor Sports - Motorcross at 7:30 p.m.

Friday will feature the Northern Kentucky Tractor Pullers Association Tractor and Truck Pull at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 1 is kids day at the Greenup County Fair. The days events will feature an antique tractor show at 10 a.m. a dog show will take place at 11 a.m. The livestock sale of Grand Champions, Sale of Reserve Champions, and the sale of all other animals including rabbits, poultry, lambs, goats, steers feeder calves, feeder pigs and hogs will take place at noon, and an Antique Tractor Pull will take place at 4 p.m. in the main arena before the lawn mower races at 8 p.m.

“This is turning into our biggest event. The lawn mower races are put on by local people,” Sizemore said. “Over 50 lawnmowers participated in last years race.”

Daily admission to the fair is $10 with free parking, admission includes carnival rides. Kids three and under are admitted free with a $6 charge for rides. The Greenup County Fair Grounds is located on State Route 23 in Greenup. For more information call 606-473-5904.
