Now that is out for summer break, Portsmouth City Schools invites the community to try out its new walking track beginning next week.

The 400-meter track is part of the second phase of development of the school’s athletic complex. Phase 1 included the football field, basketball courts, boys baseball field, and new administrative office and cost about $8 million, said Superintendent Scott Dutey. Phase 2 began construction more than a year ago and includes the running track and girls softball field. The track opened in March but the softball field is still in development, so the total cost of Phase 2 is not yet available, Dutey said.

“We had a lot of great compliments on it. We were able to host several meets at both the junior high and high school level. Everyone who came into the facility really liked it. I think we did it right and we’re looking forward to continuing to provide those opportunities for our kids; and now this summer for the public,” Dutey said.

The track gate will be open next to Second Presbyterian Church starting Monday from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays only through the summer. The track will not be open on weekends. Strollers, skateboards and bicycles are not allowed on the track surface.

Ryan Scott Ottney may be reached at 740-353-3101, ext. 287, or rottney@civitasmedia.com. For breaking news, follow Ryan on Twitter @PDTwriter.

  • This Ford Explorer caught fire and then exploded in a parking lot along Fifth Street in downtown Portsmouth about 2 p.m. Friday. The vehicle's occupants -- a man, woman and child -- escaped safely. The Portsmouth Fire Department responded within minutes and extinguished the engine fire. Check back for details, including an interview with the driver.
