Ohio Senator Joe Uecker was in Portsmouth Monday afternoon on the invitation of Main Street Portsmouth. While in town Uecker, toured several small businesses and attended a presentation about the ongoing activities of Main Street Portsmouth.

“Our mission here in Portsmouth is to preserve our buildings, our historic districts and to revitalize downtown. We also promote and support small businesses that we have, part of what we are doing today is tour some of our small businesses that have done some neat things with their businesses,” said Scott Moore, President of Main Street Portsmouth.

Uecker toured Yost Engineering, Lofts at 840 Gallia and the Portsmouth Brewing Company, among others.

During the presentation, Uecker was informed of current Main Street activities which included ongoing beautification efforts and efforts to add items to Alexandra Point Park.

Other activities included informing Uecker about the fourth season of the Main Street Portsmouth Farmer’s Market, held on Saturdays through October on the Roy Rogers Esplanade and ongoing cash mobs held every month. As well as ongoing efforts to help small business owners within the district.

During the presentation Moore informed Uecker about the Building Improvement Grant Program Main Street administers in partnership with the city of Portsmouth.

“Through this program we are able to disperse $25,000 annually. We are working on different ways to improve and increase the amount we give out every year,” Moore said. “The money is available to exterior building improvements to any of the historic buildings in our district. We have had over 25 buildings that has benefited from this program and in 2012 generating close to $170,000 worth of improvements.”
