Locals compete on TV’s ‘Cupcake Wars’

WAYNE ALLEN

PDT Staff Writer

OTWAY — Alyssa Logan, of Dayton, and her mother Julie Blackburn, of Otway, were among the competitors on Sunday night’s episode of “Cupcake Wars” on the Food Network.

“It was an amazing experience,” Logan said, talking about her time on the show.

She said even though her business ‘83 Sweets is located in Dayton, the majority of her business comes from southern Ohio. They also are looking to open a location of ‘83 Sweets in Scioto County in the future.

According to information about the show on www.foodnetwork.com, “each week on Cupcake Wars, four of the country’s top cupcake bakers face off in three elimination challenges until only one decorator remains. The sweet prize: $10,000 and the opportunity to showcase their cupcakes at the winning gig. Candace Nelson (owner of Sprinkles Cupcakes) and Florian Bellanger (chef and co-owner of online macaroon company MadMac) serve as permanent judges with a third rotating judge each week.”

Logan said she was picked to be on the show among thousands of applicants, and believes her 1980s-themed bakery is what set them apart.

“A lot of people can relate to our 80’s theme. Whether young or old the 80s is popular. People have either lived through it or was born around that time,” Logan said. “I wanted to be a local girl, on a national television show, and give some support to small communities. The show would typically pick people that had already been established or who were from bigger cities.”

Blackburn said one of the recipes the mother-daughter duo made which the judges enjoyed was a carob cake with a sunflower butter frosting and a sweet avocado filling.

Logan and Blackburn said they have received nothing but love and support from family and friends since the show aired Sunday evening. The episode will air again on the Food Network tonight 8 p.m., tomorrow at 3 a.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
