The Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra celebrates the start of its 20th Anniversary season with a free performance of patriotic and American music in the Tracy Park Band Shell on Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Guest performer Steve Free and his band will sing from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and the PSO will perform starting at 7 p.m.

“It is exciting to think that the PSO has been performing concerts in Portsmouth for 20 years,” says Orchestra Music Director and Conductor, Carl Daehler. “Our first concert was at the Esplanade in 1993 and since that time the all-volunteer orchestra has grown into a seasoned, professional-quality ensemble giving four or five concert each season. We our proud of our heritage and of plans for our 20th season beginning in October.”

The concert will be an old-fashioned concert in the park and will feature a just the wind, brass and percussion sections.

The orchestra will perform a tribute to our armed forces, marches by Karl King, Henry Fillmore, and John Philip Sousa, as well as other popular favorites from the stage and screen. Radio host Steve Hayes, of WNXT, will narrate the Declaration of Independence accompanied by the orchestra.

Lee Auer, instrumental director at Valley High School will be this year’s guest conductor.

“The orchestra has been rehearsing all month on this concert and we are excited to be a part of the city’s July 4th celebration again this year,” Auer said. “I am thrilled to be on the podium conducting the PSO in this special concert during Maestro Daehler’s absence. As director of bands in the Valley School District, I have chosen a lot of exciting pieces for the concert for the entire family. It will be a great evening for all. The concert is free so bring a chair and enjoy. We will be done in plenty of time to get down to the river to watch the fireworks.”

Subscription tickets to the 2012-13 season will be available beginning in August at the Vern Riffe Center box office.
