Kasich dedicates Habitat house

By WAYNE ALLEN

PDT Staff Writer

Gov. John Kasich was in West Portsmouth on Thursday to help Scioto County Habitat For Humanity dedicate its 10th home.

“We are here today for Josh and Sara Arnold, to put them in this new home,” said Laura Walker, co-president of Scioto County Habitat for Humanity.

Kasich praised the Habitat for Humanity organization for its efforts with building safe and affordable housing around the world for those in need.

“The Lord gave us a life on Earth to reflect his glory. While we are here, even though we fall so short, it’s our job to reflect who God is. This means we have to help people who are not as fortunate as we are,” Kasich said.

According to Rob Nichols, Kasich’s press secretary, this was the first Habitat for Humanity dedication Kasich has been a part of as governor.

During the ceremony, the Arnold family presented Habitat with a check for the first month’s mortgage. Habitat presented the family with the keys to the house.

“This is a dream come true,” Josh Arnold said.

Walker said Habitat will be building two more homes in Portsmouth this year. With the next one being built on Linden Avenue for the family of Carey White.

Among those in attendance were Ryan Miller, executive director of Ohio Habitat For Humanity.

“All of you here today are part of a movement, a movement that is much larger than our gathering here in West Portsmouth,” Miller said. “There are 500,000 Habitat homes around the world in 90 countries, with 4,000 of those homes here in Ohio. Our program has had great success in large part because of the wonderful partner families that have made Habitat such a strong organization.”

The house was dedicated in honor of the late Dr. Thomas Swope. Swope was member of Habitat’s board of directors at the time of his death.

I am truly happy for the family who will be living in this home. And I am so proud of the community that rallied to help. But I can't help but to see the irony in the fact that Kasich seems to be doing what he can to keep this county unemployed and poor and then comes to dedicate a Habitat For Humanity home. Heck of a fella!
