WHEELERSBURG — An opportunity for adventure was given to youth in the Counseling Center’s Summer Outreach Program as they spent the day at the Scioto Hills Christian Camp and Retreat.

Established in 1965, Scioto Hills Camp hosts a variety of engaging events for the participants such as tackling the “The Summit Challenge Tower,” which is a 40-foot vertical climbing wall designed for all ages. The enormous wooden structure challenges the agility and manual dexterity of each climber.

Other activities which the Summer Outreach Camp group participated in consisted of a low ropes obstacle course, swimming, and visiting an animal farm on the camp’s sight.

“We brought the kids out to experience summer youth camp to see what’s it like, to give them some new experiences and to let them come out here in the wild, we’ve never done that before,” said Clarence Parker, Coordinator of Outreach Summer Camp. “So they are stretching themselves, and learning some new things. Hopefully they will enjoy the experience enough that they might think about coming back for youth camp at some point in the future. So it will be a day in the woods of some outdoors fun.”

Scott Bruns, Executive Director of Scioto Hills Camp since 2006, provided a tour of the camp, expounding upon all of the features that the camp provides.

“We just enjoy touching the lives of the youth that come here to the camps, and to see some of their lives transformed, its just amazing,” Bruns said.

Scioto Hills Christian Camp and Retreat provides a myriad of other engaging activities not only for kids, but for families to enjoy, such as the Avalanche Zip Line, X-Scream, composed high ropes for intermediate ability, paddle boats, bike trails and much more.
