NEW BOSTON — Tractor Supply Company will open the doors to its newest location this weekend, on Rhodes Avenue in New Boston.

The company is moving into 31,500-square feet of the of 112,000-square foot building that was originally built for Walmart and opened in 1990. The building has been empty since Walmart moved to its new, larger location in New Boston in 2007. Since the retail giant left, the surrounding mall has been unable to support other, smaller businesses. According to the New Boston Village, there are 20 properties in the mall (including the divided Walmart building), and 11 of them are empty.

A fenced exterior space next to Tractor Supply will be used for storage and displaying items such as fencing, sprayers and livestock equipment. The store will employ 13 full- and part-time employees.

“We can’t wait to swing open the doors and start welcoming customers into the store,” Store Manager Chris Crawford said. “We look forward to serving our neighbors in New Boston and the surrounding communities.”

An official grand opening event will be scheduled in mid-June, with prize giveaways and festivities including a pet adoption hosted by Sierra’s Haven and pet vaccinations by the Shawnee Animal Clinic.

Based in Brentwood, Tenn., Tractor Supply Company claims to be the largest retail farm and ranch supply store chain in the United States. According to its website, the company started in 1938 when Charles Schmidt Sr., of Chicago established a mail order tractor parts business. Within a year, a retail location opened in Minot, N.D. With 1,085 locations in 44 states, other nearby Tractor Supply Company locations are in Russell and Maysville, Ky., and Jackson, Chillicothe, and Circleville, Ohio.

Tractor Supply Company opens in New Boston on Saturday, June. 2. The store’s regular business hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. More information about Tractor Supply Company can be found at www.tractorsupply.com.
