A Portsmouth couple faces charges after the husband was discovered cooking meth within 100 feet of a child. John P. Riddle, 38, and Angel L. Riddle, 32, of 1810 Kendall Ave. Apartment E, were arrested on Friday afternoon.

John Riddle was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine within 100 feet of the vicinity of a child, a felony of the first degree; illegal possession or assembly of chemicals for the manufacture of methamphetamine, a third degree felony; endangering children, a third degree felony, and possession of drugs, a felony of the fifth degree. Angel Riddle is charged with endangering children, and a fourth degree misdemeanor charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware and Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said around 2:41 p.m. Friday, officers from the Portsmouth Police Department responded to the complaint of individuals allegedly cooking methamphetamine inside an apartment located at 1810 Kendall Ave. Apt. E Portsmouth, Ohio. After obtaining consent to search the residence, officers found materials used to manufacture methamphetamine as well as evidence of methamphetamine actually being manufactured.

Officers from the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force were summoned to the apartment to process and dismantle the methamphetamine lab. With the assistance of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation Clandestine Lab Unit and the Portsmouth Fire Department, Task Force personnel recovered an active “one pot” methamphetamine lab, a hydrogen chloride gas generator, packages of pseudoephedrine, Coleman fuel, ether, acid, lye, ammonium nitrate and coffee filters.

The Riddles were placed in the Scioto County Jail and were arraigned on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 9 a.m. John Riddle is currently being held on an $87,500 bond, while Angel Riddle is being held on a $7,750 bond.

The case against both will be forwarded to the Scioto County Prosecutor’s Office to be presented to a Scioto County grand jury.

In making the announcement, Ware commended the actions taken by the patrolmen who discovered the methamphetamine lab and made the arrests.

Ware and Donini also thanked the Portsmouth Fire Department and the Ohio BCI Clan Lab Unit for their assistance and said anyone wishing to leave drug information for the Southern Ohio Drug Task Force may contact the Task Force tip line at 740-354-5656 or e-mail drugs@sciotocountysheriff.com. All information will be kept confidential and anonymous.
