The STAR Inc. Charity Car Show will be held Saturday, July 14, at 2625 Gallia St., behind Vern Riffe School in Portsmouth. Kelly Hunter, director of Adult Services at the Scioto County Board of Developmental Disabilities (SCBDD), said the event is held to raise money for local charities as a way to give back to the community.

“We began this event as a way to raise money for others,” Hunter said. “It’s just part of who we are as an organization. Our community continues to support us, so we in turn want to return the support in various ways.”

The money raised during this year’s event will benefit two local organizations — The Challenger Baseball League and the Disabled Children’s Fund.

Mike Bell of the Challenger Baseball League said the funds are greatly needed as July approaches.

“Every year they have a state tournament, which consists of all the districts in the state of Ohio,” Bell said. “In previous years it has been in Cleveland, and in Columbus, and in Akron. This year they selected Wheelersburg. Now, in July we will be hosting the state tournament in Wheelersburg, and we’ll be having kids and their families converging on Wheelersburg for the whole weekend. So putting on a show like that and having the games all weekend costs a lot of money. So whenever we have an organization such as the DD Board take a step up and say, ‘hey, we want to help you out,’ it’s fantastic. That’s what this is, to go to the tournament to put this on for all the kids in the state of Ohio.”

Registration will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration fee is $12 and includes a T-shirt. Hunter said antiques, classics, customs, trucks and motorcycles are all welcome. Trophies awarded will include top 25 and five specialty trophies. Judging will take place at noon and trophies will be presented at 3 p.m. The event will also include door prizes, grand prizes and a 50/50 drawing.
