The Scioto County Commissioners were honored on Wednesday with the Ohio Association of Extension Professionals Appreciation Award from the Ohio Association of Extension Professionals (OAEP). They were given the award for their contribution to, and support of extension programming in Scioto County and on a statewide level.

The award was presented to the commissioners during the Ohio State University Extension Annual Conference held at Ohio State University Wednesday.

According to released information, “the Ohio Association of Extension Professionals Appreciation Award is given annually to a small number of individuals or organizations who have been long standing supporters of county and statewide extension programming and who take an active role in promoting the Ohio State University Extension in their county.”

According to Skip Riffe, Chairman of the Scioto County Commissioners, one of the programs they recommended cutting funding from was the county extension services because the county has been in fiscal emergency status with the Auditor of State’s office.

“We said no, and I think that’s being recognized here today. Extension services are very important in Scioto County, that’s evident through the many 4-H programs we have. We have always supported this program and hope to continue to do so,” Riffe said.

According to Jo Williams, Scioto County 4-H Youth Development Educator, the extension office wanted to show their appreciation to the commissioners with this award.

“We wanted to recognize them in front of all of our colleagues, from across the state. When other counties have struggled and cut funding to extension programs, our commissioners have always found value in the programs that we do and supported us,” Williams said.

Also during the conference Monadine Mattey, OSU Extension Educator Family and Consumer Sciences of the Scioto County Extension office, won the Marilyn Spiegal Excellence in Family and Consumer Sciences Award.
