U.S. Sen. Rob Portman and 2nd District Congressional candidate Brad Wenstrup toured southern Ohio on Friday with a stop in Scioto County. The two met with supporters at the Holiday Inn in downtown Portsmouth.
The two Republicans also made stops in Brown, Adams, Pike, Highland counties.
Before the Scioto County event, Portman took Wenstrup on a driving tour of Portsmouth’s flood wall murals.
Wenstrup defeated incumbent Jean Schmidt in the March Republican primary and will face Democrat William R. Smith in November’s General Election.
“We have many issues facing us today, such as jobs and the economy. If elected, I would consider my job to be an ambassador for the area and will work hard every day to help better the area,” Wenstrup said.
Wenstrup is a medical doctor and combat surgeon. He also plans to marry fiancee Monica today.
While at the event, Portman said he spoke to U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Thursday about the pending loan guarantee application $2 billion from USEC.
“I explained to him that we have done what he has asked us to do, and yet we are still waiting. We have to keep that RD&D funding going until we get some new leadership, who understands the project’s importance to our national, energy and economic security.”
Following the Portsmouth meeting, Portman and Wenstrup visited the DOE Plant in Piketon to meet with site contractors.
