A Haverhill man is in jail on suspicion of raping a 15-year-old girl.
The Scioto County Sheriff’s Office was called to Southern Ohio Medical Center on Tuesday where the girl, whose identity was not released, reported being sexually assaulted.
According to a press release from Sheriff Marty V. Donini, detectives said the girl met Gene R. Zimmerman, 37, in an Internet chat room, where he led her to believe he would take her to a friend’s house in Ashland, Ky. Deputies said the alleged victim only knew Zimmerman by his screen name, Bubbles. The victim reported she was taken to an apartment in Haverhill, where she was sexually assaulted.
The girl was treated at SOMC and then sent to Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe.
Zimmerman has been charged with one count of rape, a first-degree felony. Donini said deputies are continuing the investigation and more charges could be presented to a Scioto County grand jury. Zimmerman is being held in the Scioto County jail on a $50,000 bond and will appear Monday in Portsmouth Municipal Court.
Anyone with any information concerning this case is asked to call Detective Jodi Conkel at 740-351-1091. All calls will remain anonymous.
