The Vern Riffe Center for the Arts, at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, will host two shows this month — the Toledo Symphony on Oct. 14, and the National Circus of the People’s Republic of China on Oct. 30.

First, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, the Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association (SOPAA) welcomes the Toledo Symphony. The symphony is performing a special afternoon of music by American composers, George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and many others. Conductor Jeffrey Pollock is known internationally for the musicality of his performances, his innovative concert programming, and for his ability to make connections with audiences.

The featured composition for this performance will be George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Michael Boyd, professor of piano at The University of Toledo will be performing this piece of American music.

Then on Tuesday, Oct. 30, the National Circus of the People’s Republic of China is performing “Cirque Chinois” at 7:30 p.m. at the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts.

Direct from Beijing, the National Circus of the People’s Republic of China is one of the longest running and most distinguished circus troupes in China founded in 1953. The troupe is especially acclaimed because of its unique acts such as the Great Teeterboard, Grand Flying Trapeze, Group Contortion, Straw Hats, Juggling, Girls’ Balance with Bowls, and many other exciting acts.

The Company has won more than twenty gold and silver medals and many other awards at international circus festivals including the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival, Cirque de Demain, Wuqiao International Circus Festival, Wuhan International Circus Festival and China National Acrobatic Competition.

The Toledo Symphony concert on Oct. 14 is sponsored by the Scioto Foundation and is part of the Charles Varney Classic Series. Tickets are $36 to $38 for regular admission; $34 to $36, senior admission; and $29 to $32, student admission. The performance of “Cirque Chinois” by the National Circus of the People’s Republic of China is Oct. 30. Tickets are priced between $33 and $35 for adults; $31 to $33 for seniors age 60 and over; $28 to $30 for students; and $15 to $17 for children 12 and under.

To purchase tickets for either show, call the McKinley Box Office at 740-351-3600 or visit www.ticketmaster.com.
