It was a tough day in Sioux City for the Bears as they dropped a heart-breaking 77-69 overtime game in the second round of the NAIA Division II National Championships.Shawnee State shot 10-for-17 from the free throw line in the second half and overtime while Hastings was 16-for-19 in that same stretch. The Bears managed just five points in overtime, going scoreless in a four-minute stretch while Hastings built up a six-point advantage. For SSU, it was a game much more like they’re accustomed to. They returned to form from beyond the arc (shooting 9-for -19), and avoided another slow start. But they just did not have an answer for the six-foot Lindsay Ducey in the second half and overtime. Her size was an asset for the Lady Broncos as she scored 21 points after the break and 30 total. The Bears walked off the court with their first loss of the season being the one that ends it all. Seniors Becky Babione and Kelly Wagner each scored in double-figures. Junior forward Alison Meyer again led the Bears, scoring 17.The team has updated its travel plans and will leave Sioux City at 5 a.m. to catch an 8 a.m. flight. They are planning to return home late Sunday afternoon. There’s more to come in this blog later today with full coverage in tomorrow’s Portsmouth Daily Times.
